Measuring and reporting on the quality of a translation is not to be taken lightly, nor can it be done in only one way. The TQA module in any CAT tool must have the flexibility to support the quality model most appropriate for the context of the translation, and to reduce duplication of effort in the process. The key principle is to fully integrate these operations into the translation process.

It is on this stage — or even earlier — that a need for telephone interpreting from foreign languages appeared. Live communication without limits — this is the goal of video interpreting. And the means of implementation can vary even today. This is what Alex Leshchinsky spoke about in his presentation at #UTICamp.

Translation issues are always in the spotlight, while the challenges of editing get a lot less attention than they actually deserve, even though editing is something we all do every once in a while (and have mixed feelings about). Translation companies, translation, and proofreading professionals have met them, for sure. Those issues have been widely discussed on small and big kitchens, however, they still exist. Some are never made public or only mentioned among trusted people at most, as one can lose the client. It’s not about being right or wrong and it’s definitely not about complaining. There is a question, there must be an answer. It’s more efficient to find solutions together with colleagues and people, who have mutual aims.

The market of the ex-USSR republics is extremely unattractive for those experienced freelance translators who live there. Despite the fact that most of us started with local companies, zenith of glory for all of us is cooperation with foreign companies only. This is not a big surprise, because rates are 7-10 (or even more) times higher. But we have a problem here. The thing is that you can easily contact locals in person, which is not the case when ’foreigners’ are concerned. How one can market her business with only a mouse and a keyboard? We will try to answer this question and figure out how to always get your payment from your clients, i. e. those whom you will (most probably) never be able to see in person.

«In my presentation I propose to discuss a snapshot of oral interpretation as it developed in newly independent Ukraine. Developments presented themselves in suggested circumstances as in role-playing. Such processes in more cases than one corresponded with adventures of my professional life. My experience might well be recognized as special in such a way, that I started at the unusual end, and had to practice interpretation as an art rather than a craft. That was my inclination, and such was the inclination on the inclined plane, which served as a groove for that movement. It led from the most sophisticated activities to less complex ones, hence, in a direction next to opposite to the natural cause of events. My reference point was in command of my mother tongue and application of Ukrainian for the purposes of interpreting from and into English. Another peculiar feature of our milieu is bilingualism and incessant competition between Russian and Ukrainian for the position a core language. Thus work of interpreter reveals acute problems, important for linguistic environment and prevalence of language(s). Art of interpretation takes a new turn in creative use in films, theatre and TV».

In the past 5 years, language technologies have been supported with 150 million EUR in EU technology programmes. The objective is to create a single online market without language barriers, and to facilitate communication, collaborative work and automatic information analysis across language barriers. The supported technologies are mostly language-independent.

The presentation will outline novel translation technologies developed in EU projects (for example, machine translation, computer-aided translation, website localization, terminology support), and indicate how LSPs and translators can contribute to and benefit from the results of the projects.

The translation industry feels there is a gap between what we need and what the European translator training produces. The authors have gathered and systematized best practices from translation companies in Ukraine and Russia looking at how businesses interact with higher education institutions in order to bridge the gap between the workforce supply needs of the translation industry and the academic system’s capability to satisfy them. Statistical analysis results from three studies covering the industry main players underpin findings in this presentation. Several years of experience in translation has enabled Asya to study the problem of medical and pharmaceutical texts and terminology and create her own translation approach. In 2012 translated materials for “Body Worlds” exhibition of Gunther von Hagens in Kyiv.  Asya performs translations in the area of sport traumatology, oncology, cardiology, biology, microbiology, genetics, surgery, medical equipment, X-ray investigations etc. for private clients and organizations.

Anna is a freelance interpreter and translator. She got a Master's degree from Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University in Translation and Interpreting from English and French Languages, and then a Master's degree from the Institute of Translators, Interpreters and International Relations (Strasbourg, France) in Conference Interpreting. Anna has worked as simultaneous interpreter since 2007. Large projects with short deadlines require a real-time Translation Memory environment to keep consistency in terminology. However, pushing qualified translators to learn or especially purchase new tools on a short notice is extremely difficult.
Facing this challenge in 2012, AKM-West decided to utilize MemSource Cloud, an online translation memory environment which is easy to learn and is free for translators and editors. For this project the agency was able to enlist specialized linguists who had no prior experience with MemSource, teach them how to use the tool, then handle a project of 80 pages. All in a couple of hours, delivering it to the client the same day!

Fedir Fesai, CEO of Yus Augmentive localization company, will talk about thedifficulties of machine translation post-editing for Russian, Ukrainian and other Slavic languages.
Fedir is convinced that post-editing projects for inflexional languages is much more labor-consuming than those for analytical languages, for example, English; and for the most part post-editing is as expensive as translating from scratch. Therefore, post-editing in not a viable concept at present level of MT development.
